The Colossus of Rhodes was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, a massive bronze statue of the sun god Helios built on the Greek island of Rhodes around 280 BC. After a brutal siege in 305 BC by Demetrius Poliorcetes and his 40,000 soldiers, the Rhodians emerged victorious. To celebrate, they used the abandoned enemy weapons and bronze to fund the project.
